Ark Nova is a board game centered around the theme of zoo management and conservation. Players take on the roles of zoo directors, competing to build the most prestigious and scientifically successful zoological institution. This is achieved through strategic acquisition of animals, construction of specialized enclosures and facilities, and the implementation of global conservation projects. Success hinges on careful planning, resource management, and the effective utilization of specialized personnel and unique building options. Gameplay in Ark Nova revolves around a worker placement mechanism using a hand of five action cards. Each card, representing actions such as acquiring new zoo assets (animals, sponsors, and projects), constructing enclosures, accommodating animals, managing personnel, and securing sponsorships, possesses variable power depending on its position within the player’s hand. The strategic selection and placement of these cards is crucial to optimize actions and effectively manage the various aspects of zoo operation. The core gameplay loop involves utilizing a large deck of 255 cards, each with unique abilities that contribute to building a successful and highly-rated zoo, measured by a points system that rewards both conservation efforts and zoological appeal.
